Flipping A Language Arts Classroom

Colleen Yanez a language arts teacher at Powell middle school in LPS, shares her experience with flipping her language arts class. Why she did it and why she will continue.

Why I like flipping:

  • Saves time on mundane note taking/review work so class work can focus on more critical skills
  • Eliminates behaviors that arise when kids are super fast at in-class note taking, while others need more time
  • Kids can work at their own pace AND can refer back to the video if they forgot something at a later time
  • The teacher can reuse the video from year to year; saves from repeating the same lecture 5 times in one day!
  • Great for kids reviewing for essays/exams, etc

Tips:

  • Keep the video to a minimum: 6 - 10 minutes
  • Have the students do something interactive while watching the video, such as note taking or answering questions, but keep it light and quick!
  • Teach kids how to pay attention during an educational video; it was eye-opening how many benefited from this lesson!
  • Know what you're going to say, but don't worry about getting the video perfect.
  • Strive to only do one take!

How? Screencastify: It's a free google extension. loads directly into google drive and easily uploads into Google Classroom. No issues on students' devices when playing back the videos.

EdPuzzle: Now a free google extension and website. It converts youtube videos into videos one can use with the filter on. Syncs with Google Classroom. You can monitor student progress if properly sent via classroom (each assignment needs to be individually uploaded to each class or it won't monitor progress). It can clip videos and add questions as students watch that help monitor thinking...and progress.

One of My Flipping Examples: I ran a debate unit this year. I didn't want students to lose four (4) instructional days watching debates, so I used videos to instruct students during the debate. Students worked at their own pace and were able to watch videos that correlated with specific parts of the essay. It was extremely successful and awesome!
